Look out 123-reg customers

9th March, 2006

Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear.

Podz was having trouble with 123-reg, a domain registrar I’ve used for years.

What he said was true - their auto-renew system was screwed (they told me this) so you had to make sure you responded to their “your domain is expiring soon” emails and renewed manually.

Recently, I’ve had a couple of domains, here and (more worryingly) at work renew automatically. Great, I thought.

Only the next day I get an email from Nominet (make sure you keep those contact email addresses up to date or you’ll miss these) saying that I hadn’t renewed.

The whois output says I haven’t renewed. 123-reg control panel (and email invoice) says I have.

I’ve fired off an email to them pointing out that they appear to have taken payments and not delivered. Their response should be interesting.

At the moment one domain is affected. I expect 3 more to become affected tomorrow.

In the meantime, I really need to find myself a new registrar. These people don’t deserve my custom.
